Why the UEM ?

Euro-Mediterranean relations represent a dominant issue in European studies. The Mediterranean area is the ideal place for the analysis of social, economic and political processes in a context of profound changes. Bilateral and multilateral relations between the countries of northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean area are continuously redefined. In recent years, interest in this area has intensified with the birth of the Arab "revolutions" and the end of political authoritarianism.

Based upon the former experience of the Free University of the Mediterranean (ULM) in 2007, the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMU) of the IEE is in continuity and complementarity of the Institute of European Studies (IEE) and other summer universities of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. This summer interdisciplinary and international university offers a wide comprehension of the Euro-Mediterranean issues at the interface between sociology, history, anthropology, literature, law, political science and economics.

The objective is to present Arab countries in transition interacting with Western Europe countries by providing an intensive week-long introduction of training and information on a space in movement and in crisis.

In this perspective, EMU offers an original training to discover the North / South relations in a symbolic space dominated by a common history with singular narratives. The goal of EMU is to transmit the necessary knowledge enabling students to understand this space throughout its diachronic and synchronic historical dimension. The interdisciplinary approach will provide a unique training given by specialists (ethnographers, historians, political scientists, economists, lawyers and sociologists...). EMU targets an international academic audience of Master students.
